Qualitative research is a relative newcomer to veterinary education research. Because it looks very different to quantitative research in terms of size, scope, and terminology it can be daunting to navigate for those just getting started. In this beginner’s workshop we will introduce participants to what qualitative research is, the type of questions it can effectively address, the diversity of approaches available, and the unique insights it can offer. We will also address evaluative criteria taken into account during design of robust qualitative research projects. Using examples from veterinary and human medical education, we will walk through the stages involved in designing a qualitative project. The focus will be on assisting participants to develop an understanding of qualitative research design principles so that they may be better equipped to develop and conduct a robust project that delivers worthwhile outcomes. Participants will come away with a toolkit of helpful resources to get them started in qualitative research. The intended learning outcomes for participants are: (1) Describe what qualitative research is and the types of questions it can address; (2) Explain the principles of qualitative research design and how it may be evaluated; (3) Access resources helpful for beginners in qualitative research.en_US
